Explore and join Gonzo on his quest for El Dorado

Gonzo’s Quest was the first slot by NetEnt I ever played. I was immediately impressed, and began to wonder why I haven’t been playing these games before. When a buddy of mine sent me a link to this slot one day, I thought nothing of it and figured it was just another run of the mill slot. How wrong I was.

Gonzo’s Quest immediately shows its superiority as soon as you enter the game. The first thing you see is a flash movie featuring the main character – Gonzo. Based on the famous Spanish Conquistador Francisco Pizarro González Pissarro. Your journey begins along with Gonzo and his quest for the Eldorado, the lost city of gold.

Throughout the game, Gonzo stands by your side in your own quest for riches. He is a big part of the game. During certain winning spins he comes out and does a little dance to celebrate with you. This is just one of the many creative, and fun parts of the slot you will enjoy.

This slot is unlike most, but plays the same, if that makes any sense at all.

It’s the same as far as the concept using reels, spins, and so on. But, where it becomes unique is the use of what’s called the Avalanche feature. It’s much like a normal spin, but instead of spinning reels, the symbols fall down on the reels like an avalanche.

After a win, the avalanche continues as symbols burst in a visually stunning 3D display to drop more symbols and potentially create more wins.

One aspect of the game that I really liked was how it feels. It’s tight and just feels good. It’s difficult to explain, but once you play it, you’ll understand what I mean.

I compare it to driving a BMW. The controls, buttons and everything just feel tight and of high quality. This is how Gonzo’s Quest feels when you’re in the driver’s seat.

A common theme among NetEnt early releases is the replacement of the typical bonus game. Many slots like to use scatter symbols to trigger bonus rounds or free spins. In Gonzo’s Quest, you still have a few bonus features that make it worth playing. But, they are not like traditional slots. I’ll go over this in just a second.

I wanted to talk about the mobile side of Gonzo’s Quest first.

You can play Gonzo’s Quest on most mobile devices. It’s compatible with iOS and Android devices. The same features you find in the PC version, can also be found on the mobile version. NetEnt slots were designed to translate well to the mobile side of gaming. Just another reason they are considered one of the best.

Short game explanation

The main bonus features in Gonzo’s Quest are quite amusing and intuitive. If you actually read my opening statements, you know that they are different from other slots. If you are like 99% of people out there, including myself, you have no attention span and like to skip over everything and missed out on the most amazing piece of literature ever put to paper.

You also need me to explain the bonus features in Gonzo’s Quest. Which I will do. Right after I go over the basics the game. Consider it your punishment for skipping over what took me all day to create.

Don’t worry, I’ll keep it short and sweet.

General Information

Gonzo’s Quest is a 5 reel slot with 20 pay lines. There are coin levels, bet levels and Autoplay features. One thing Gonzo’s Quest does not have is a pay line selector. You must play all lines on every spin; a little odd, but it is what it is.

Symbols

All symbols are depictions of ancient looking things. Think the opening scene of Indiana Jones Raiders of the Lost Ark on this one.

Freefall Symbol

This symbol is a gold symbol that looks like a sun sticking its tongue out at you. It also triggers the Avalanche feature.

Wild

Wilds are a question mark symbols.

Avalanche Feature

The coolest part of Gonzo’s Quest is the Avalanche Feature. Anytime a win is made, certain blocks explode and create an avalanche of new blocks falling down. This happens every time and can create new winning combinations.

The best part is, each time you get a win from an avalanche, the multiplier goes up. You will see a multiplier bar at the top right.

  • 1st win worth 1x
  • 2nd win worth 2x
  • 3rd win worth 3x
  • 4th win worth 5x

This happens more often than you would think. For a bonus feature, you would think it only happens sparsely.

In game bonus features

Aside from the Avalanche Feature, there is a Free Fall Feature as the 2nd bonus feature. The sun symbol will trigger this feature when 3 or more in succession appear during a spin. Once triggered, you get 10 free fall spins. It’s basically 10 free spins.

During the Free Fall mode, the Avalanche Feature comes into play, with one big difference. The multipliers go up big time during Free Fall mode.

  • 1st win worth 3x
  • 2nd worth 6x
  • 3rd worth 9x
  • 4th worth 15x

Free Falls can also be retriggered during this feature.

Final thoughts

Gonzo’s Quest holds a special place in my heart, so I am a bit biased when it comes to judging this slot. But for good reason.

Everything about Gonzo’s Quest is great. The gameplay, the graphics, the wins, and so on. It’s easy to play, easy to understand and has something for all levels of slot players.

If I was to make a top 5 list of slots, this would be on that list without a doubt.
