Avalon Slot, more than just a fruits slot.

Avalon the slot takes you back to a simpler time where value and entertainment was the goal when creating a slot. MicroGaming has created some of the more popular slots over the past decade that include Thunderstruck I and II. They know what players like and deliver most of the times, Avalon is no different in this regard.

Set in the time of King Arthur, Avalon’s theme is based on Excalibur, the sword in the stone fable but, will only be felt in the symbols and soundtrack.

Yes, this is an older generation of online slots, but there’s a reason online casinos still offer it in their library of games. The players love its mix of simplicity and bonuses. The learning curve in Avalon is very small, with almost any level of player being able to hop right on and play without having to figure out what does what.

My first impression of Avalon was made years ago when online slots first started flooding the market. I was impressed with it then, and it remains one of my favorite slots to this day. Being an older slot, it is very similar to other MicroGaming slots from this generation.

Avalon doesn’t necessarily set itself apart when it comes to bonuses and payouts. In fact, these are rather basic with free spins being the one major bonus. It does however set itself apart in the variance department. With more and more slots becoming high variance, Avalon has a return to player of 97%. Compare this to modern slots that routinely come out at around 95% and you can see the difference is noticeable.

Being an older slot, Avalon is not available for play on mobile devices. Another downfall that puts Avalon in its own class.

Short game explanation / pros and cons

The 105,000 max coin win does give you something to shoot for. For a low/medium volatility slot, this is nice to see. However, you can only win this top pay out during the free spins. When you are fortunate to win the 12 free spins, you can also win up to a 7x multiplier on any winning spin.

Other than the free spins, no other bonus feature comes with Avalon. You do have a wild symbol that can help to create more wins; but nothing really exciting going on in the bonus department.

The one main benefit to playing Avalon is its basic style of play. Unlike modern slots that are full of confusing symbols and game features, it doesn’t get much easier to play than Avalon.

Other advantages are the low bet amounts that can be used. Setting the minimum bet at just a penny per line makes it accessible for any bankroll. There is a higher bet amount for those who like to win big. The ability to play up to 10 coins per line at a value of $1.00 per coin sets the maximum bet at $200 when playing all 20 lines.

Finally, we have a gamble feature that players love to see. After any winning spin, you can play the gamble feature and try to double or quadruple your win. Playing the gamble feature has you pick what color or suit a face down card will be. If you pick the right color, you double up. Picking the correct suit will quadruple up your win.

In game bonus features

Since the free spins are the only bonus feature in Avalon, there’s not much you need to know. To trigger the free spins, you will need to hit 3 or more of the scatter symbol. Once triggered, you will 12 free spins with up to a 7x multiplier available at random.

Free spins can be re-triggered if you get 3 or more scatters once again.

Final Thoughts

I have played Avalon multiple times. First, when the slot was released years ago; and numerous times since then. While it doesn’t have much going for it in the way of features, I consider it a slot that I can go to at any time when I feel like playing a simple game that still has something to offer.

If it wasn’t for the theme and its 5 reels, I would consider Avalon to be more like a classic fruit slot on steroids, a hybrid if you will.

If you enjoy simple design, Avalon is a good fit for you. However, if graphics and lots of bonuses are your thing, you will want to stay away from Avalon.
